In June 2016, Connecticut state judges voted to approve a new mandatory continuing legal education requirement for all licensed attorneys in Connecticut. The new rule went into effect on January 1, 2017.
Beginning in calendar year 2017, attorneys licensed in Connecticut will be required to obtain twelve credit hours of continuing legal education per year – at least two of which must be in the area of ethics and professionalism – unless the attorney has applied for and been granted “exempt” status by the Statewide Grievance Committee. Connecticut’s MCLE requirement is a self-reporting system, which means that it is the responsibility of each attorney to ensure his/her own compliance with the rule.
