Paul McCarthy serves as a Senior Attorney to the University in the Office of the General Counsel. In addition to providing general legal advice to the University, Paul is responsible for the administration and management of the University’s Freedom of Information (FOI) process in the Office of the Vice President for Communications.
Prior to joining the Office of the General Counsel in 2016, Paul served as Deputy Director of Athletics for UConn where he was a part of the senior leadership team, managed the legal and regulatory affairs of the Division of Athletics, supervised the areas of facilities/event operations, human resources and labor relations and also served as sport administrator for the men’s basketball and men’s soccer programs. Prior to moving to Athletics in 2006, Paul worked in the Office of the Attorney General at UConn beginning in 1998 where he successfully represented the University in state and federal trial and appellate court matters and served as the chief legal officer for the University from 2003 to 2006. In advance of state service, Paul worked as an associate at the Hartford law firm of Halloran and Sage.
Paul earned his Bachelor of Arts degree as an Honors Scholar from the University of Connecticut and his J.D. from Suffolk University School of Law.
